There was initially some debate about whether or not New Line Cinemas upcoming movie Shazam! would actually be part of the DCEU currently being spearheaded by Warner Bros. Luckily this was indeed confirmed to be the case when WB announced it would be the Seventh film in their series following this year’s Aquaman, but it that wasn’t enough to go on, some recent set photos have tied the film to a villain we have already seen in the series.
The photos themselves were uploaded via the Twitter user, PotbellyGamers, and shows several posters for boxing matches taking place in Philadelphia. What’s interesting however is the reference to ACE Chemicals, the Gotham based chemical company responsible for making The Joker and Harley Quinn into the insane supervillain couple we know and love.

The company itself appeared in a flashback sequence in 2016’s Suicide Squad which saw The Joker (Jared Leto) pushing the lovelorn Harleen Quinzel (Margot Robbie) into the same chemicals that turned him into the bleach skinned villain. The company was also referenced however in both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.
Whilst it’s likely that this is merely a clever Easter egg, it is good to know that they are cementing the fact that this film will be taking place in the preexisting universe. Earlier this month the studio released the film’s synopsis to celebrate the start of filming. Check it out below.
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).
Shazam! Hits theaters April 5th, 2019.
