The world saw Hollywood fall to its knees over sexual harassment and abuse allegations and then rise again in support of the women who fell victim to the men in power doing these horrendous things. Widespread change and awareness has been effected. And more hate. Rose McGowan quickly put herself at the front of the fight against such atrocities against women, and she has caught some heat from people from other groups who think she is selfishly only looking after women.
McGowan was at a Barnes & Noble book signing event Wednesday night in New York City to promote her memoir, Brave, which released January 30. The audience that attended asked pre-approved questions of McGowan, but when a trans woman asked a question out of turn, things became heated.

The topic that was brought up had to do with McGowan’s previous comments about trans women.
“I have a suggestion. Talk about what you said on RuPaul. Trans women are dying and you said that we, as trans women, are not like regular women. We get raped more often. We go through domestic violence more often. There was a trans woman killed here a few blocks [away]. I have been followed home —.”
McGowan immediately engaged the woman in defense, basically stating she was misunderstood.
“Hold on. So am I. We are the same. My point was, we are the same. There’s an entire show called ID channel, a network, dedicated to women getting abused, murdered, sexualized, violated, and you’re a part of that, too, sister. It’s the same.”
The trans woman didn’t accept what McGowan had to say, and rebutted.
“You do nothing for them. Trans women are in men’s prisons. And what have you done for them?”
At this point, the women start shouting at each other and security escorts the heckler from the premises as she repeatedly states “white cis feminism”. McGowan starts coming down from the adrenaline of the moment, and can’t contain herself while still on stage. She continues with an angry monologue.
“Don’t label me, sister. Don’t put your labels on me. Don’t you f****** do that. Do not put your labels on me. I don’t come from your planet. Leave me alone. I do not subscribe to your rules. I do not subscribe to your language. You will not put labels on me or anybody. Step the f*** back. What I do for the f****** world and you should be f****** grateful. Shut the f*** up. Get off my back. What have you done? I know what I’ve done, Goddammit.”
Even though some of the members of the audience had nothing but love for her, albeit a little concerned, she continued on.
“I’m not crying; I’m f****** mad with the lies,” she exclaimed. “I’m mad that you put shit on me because I have a f****** vagina and I’m white or I’m black or I’m yellow or I’m purple. Fuck off. All of us want to say it. I just do.”
Now, being a little self-conscious about how she knows she must appear to everyone else, she keeps going.
“And you can label this thing as a breakdown. That, motherf*******, is a breakdown. Maybe not for me, but for you. I might have information you want. I might know shit that you don’t. So f****** shut up. Please systemically. For once. In the world. You know what I’m talking about. Just tell the God damned truth. Stop boxing everybody into shit. I didn’t agree to your cis f****** world. Ok? F*** off.”
Her final statement on this dug her hole a little deeper when she tried to tell everyone the difference between women and transwomen statistically.
“Trans women are women and what I’ve been trying to say is that it’s the same. The stats are not that dissimilar. When you break it down, it is a much smaller population. There’s not a network here devoted to your f****** death. There’s not advertisers advertising tampons with a camera lovingly going up a girl’s body as she’s being lovingly raped and strangled. Piss off. And until you can collect that f****** check, back up. My name is Rose McGowan and I am obviously f****** brave.”
McGowan jumped into the #MeToo conversation early, after hinting for years that Harvey Weinstein had sexually assaulted her. Since then, she has fallen out of favor for the majority of the public for her outlandish views, weird interviews, and affinity for lashing out when she comes up against opposition. She is now hurting her base by making claims against the very people who supported her in the beginning. Trans women have been a part of the conversation, and her divisive comments just make her look hateful toward anyone who isn’t a woman.
In an all too familiar twist at this point, the person who jumps on the #MeToo train with so much to say usually has the most to hide. The trans woman who attacked McGowan, Andi Dier, has been accused of sexual assault by several women when they were teens.

To say all of this was pretty bizarre would be an understatement.
