In some very random news, it’s been announced that Ryan Reynolds will star in the upcoming Pokémon movie, Detective Pikachu.
As THR reports:
The Deadpool star has signed on to star in Legendary’s live-action Pokemon movie, THR has learned.
Reynolds joins Justice Smith, who will be seen in the upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Big Little Lies actress Kathryn Newton in the movie, titled Detective Pikachu, based on the gaming franchise.
Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is directing the project, which is due to start shooting mid-January in London.
The report goes on to state that the role is motion capture “in nature”. Not many other details are known at this point, but says:
Pikachu is a species of Pokemon, while Detective Pikachu the character is a peculiar sort from the Pikachu set, a self-styled investigator who is good at finding things. Reynolds will play the titular Detective Pikachu.
The story is kicked into gear when Smith’s character’s father is kidnapped, forcing the teen to team up with Pikachu in order to find him. Newton is a sassy journalist who helps them on their quest.
The plot of the Detective Pikachu game is as follows:
The game follows a peculiar talking Pikachu who, despite not being as powerful and nimble as other Pikachu of his kind, is rather intelligent and claims to be a great detective. One day, Pikachu encounters a boy named Tim Goodman, who is able to understand what he is saying. Thus, the two begin working together to solve various mysteries revolving around Pokémon in the city.
This is definitely an interesting move, and one many fans will be interested in seeing. We’ll see Reynolds next, however, when Deadpool 2 hits theaters next year.
