While many can agree that the design we got for Pennywise The Clown in this year’s IT Movie adaptation of the popular Stephen King novel was good, it almost looked quite different. The film’s director has shared his drawings before, but the latest reveal is particularly interesting because it was back in 2015, right before Muschietti came on to the film.
The director shared this on his Instagram:

Early concept art for the film has surfaced before, but it was when it was Cary Fukunaga’s film. As you can see below, it’s very different form what we ultimately got:

One thing that helped this year’s Pennywise performance was actor Bill Skarsgård, who had a very interesting approach:
“In order for this movie to be as effective as the book and the series, I have to scare a whole generation. My take was that Pennywise functions very simply. Nothing much is going on in terms of what he’s thinking — he’s animalistic and instinctive.”
He added that he’s even been haunted by the role:
“It’s funny. I went back to Stockholm after we wrapped, and every night for two weeks, I had these strange recurring Pennywise dreams. I was him, but I was in the wrong setting, somehow. I was upset that people could see my face. It was surreal. I can’t explain it.”
With the film being a massive success both critically and financially, it would seem as though Skarsgård and everyone else involved did what they intended to do. It’s not the end of IT, either, as IT: Chapter 2 will be released in September 2019.
