Today Marvel Studios finally released the hotly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War trailer and it confirmed just what exactly the ending of Thor: Ragnarok was all about. SPOILERS ahead!
To defeat Hela in Thor: Ragnarok, Thor sends Loki to Odin’s hall of treasures to resurrect Surtur who will bring the prophesied death of Asgard, destroying Hela with it. However on his way to do his task, the trickster god is distracted by a familiar treasure: the Tesseract (or Space Stone, as it will be known in Infinity War). This is the most famous stone as it has made an appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger and was the key piece in The Avengers.
Both films gave a mere glimpse of what the stone is capable of- from powering weapons to transporting an entire army across the universe. We see its power once again being used in the trailer to give us our first look at Thanos in action.
Thor: Ragnarok ended with a brotherly moment between Thor and Loki being interrupted by a large alien spacecraft looming over their own. Many assumed that Thanos had come to claim the Tesseract that Loki rescued from Odin’s vault before the destruction of Asgard. This theory was confirmed when the trailer shows us a shaken Loki offering the Tesseract to a figure out of shot – who we can assume is the Mad Titan himself or at least one of his lackeys.
The trailer sees Thanos already in possession of two stones, one of which is the Space Stone. From recent leaked footage perhaps the Aether (a.k.a. Reality Stone) was Thanos’ first stop. However from its brief appearance, its color suggests it may actually be the Orb (Power Stone) from Guardians of the Galaxy, which was entrusted to the Nova Corp.
Some further questions do arise from this moment, however. Is Loki handing over the Tesseract to save the refugees of Asgard? Or did he initially take it with the intention of surrendering it to Thanos? Loki’s questionable motives and turbulent loyalties are leaving quite the room for speculation.
We’ll find out if Loki is to be hero or villain when Avengers: Infinity Wars hits cinemas May 4th.
