The much anticipated sequel to 2014’s massively successful Godzilla movie is currently halfway through filming, and is slated to land on our screens in March of 2019. Imperiously titled Godzilla: King of Monsters, it will see Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe reprising their roles as the hapless employees of the Monarch organisation, who are this time forced to bear witness as everybody’s favorite radioactive lizard does battle with three of his most iconic monster opponents. We’ll be getting a Godzilla anime before we see that film, though.
Having already gone and teased fans with the return of the Big G in this year’s brilliant Kong: Skull Island, Legendary Pictures are pulling out all of the stops to make their burgeoning Monterverse an assured success. What will be the 33rd entry in the long-running cinematic franchise will see Godzilla facing off against not only Mothra, but also infamous foes Rodan and King Ghidora. And if an 18 month-long wait to see all of this happening seems far too long to have to wait for, then you’re in luck. Because the 32nd movie in the series is conveniently scheduled to arrive on Netflix in a mere three short weeks time.
Godzilla: Planet Of The Monsters holds the somewhat unique accolade of being the first ever anime movie to feature the eponymous monster. This project will bear no relation to any of the other entries that have gone before it, and is instead set in the distant future. The story centers on Haruo, a young boy who successfully flees the Earth with his family as Godzilla and a multitude of other Kaiju finally wipe out what little remains of the human civilization.
This seemingly lucky salvation turns out to be tragically short-lived however, as when the colonists manage to complete their 20-year journey to another planet, they find it has now been sadly rendered uninhabitable by an unexpected natural disaster. Consumed with hatred for Godzilla, Haruo convinces the group to return to Earth, so they can destroy the creature they hold responsible for their predicament. Needless to say, this turns out to be a BAD idea.
The first trailer for the project was released two months ago, and only provided fans with a short glimpse of this new anime version of Godzilla. Netflix have today now gone released a longer version, which shows the colonists desperately trying to survive against the monster in some very ‘Knights Of Sidonia’ style action sequences.
The forty intervening years since the departure of mankind have seen the Earth now totally reclaimed by nature. Landing in a fantastic jungle environment, the trailer shows how it doesn’t take long at all for our protagonists to make contact with their mortal enemy. Desperately deploying super maneuverable hover-bikes, as well as laser-toting mechanical walkers, they soon find out that being equipped with all the technology in the world is little match when faced with a couple of concentrated streams of fiery radioactive breath.
Godzilla: Planet Of The Monsters will be available to stream on Netflix as of November 17th.
