The Marvel Cinematic Universe just had some sad news confirmed, as it’s been revealed that Baby Groot is not the same character as the Groot that died in the first Guardians of the Galaxy – per James Gunn. Guardians of the Galaxy has been a hugely popular film, however, Groot has been a fan favorite. It is decidedly hard to become attached to something as limited in speech and relatability as a tree, but James Gunn has made that happen.
When Groot sacrificed himself after the first film, it was definitely a tear-jerking moment. No one thought Marvel would kill off a character so benevolent and loved after only one film. Baby Groot grew from parts of the original Groot, and the audience was left to believe that he might be the same Groot starting his cycle all over again. James Gunn, however, has shot this theory down, saying they are completely different characters.
The director took to Facebook to address the rumors and theories surrounding the popular character. His explanation is as follows:
“I also mentioned to folks who…kept throwing the Groot revival in my face, that that example doesn’t really work because Groot is dead. Although I don’t necessarily think it’s obvious in Vol. 1, it’s important to say that if you exploded and a little glob of you started growing into a baby, I would not assume that baby was you.
I do think it’s more obvious in Vol. 2, as Baby Groot has a different personality than Groot, none of his memories, and is much, much dumber.”
The Guardians will make an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War, where we are sure to see teenage Groot, as we will in the future Marvel Cinematic Universe films. It will be fun to see him in all of his angsty glory, throwing shade and complete disinterest in light of dangerous circumstances. His post goes into greater, my fulfilling detail, and I recommend checking it out for yourselves.
