While everyone is going crazy for Stephen King, especially after the massive success of IT, the iconic author has revealed that two of his most popular stories are due for new adaptations; the vampire tale ‘Salem’s Lot and apocalyptic epic The Stand.
In a recent interview with Vulture, King said:
“There’s talk about doing The Stand as an extended TV series, possibly for Showtime or CBS All Access, and there’s been some interest in developing Salem’s Lot as a feature. Probably because people are saying, ‘Well, we took an old miniseries called It and turned it into a phenomenon, so maybe we can do it with something else.’ Nothing succeeds like excess!”
It’s definitely an exciting time to be a King fan, if not just to see these old stories get adapted with proper budgets and resources (hopefully). ‘Salem’s Lot is one I’m personally counting on, as it’s been far too long since a truly strong vampire film has hit mainstream theaters. With Andy Muschietti’s IT already becoming one of the highest-grossing horror films of all time, there’s no doubt some potential for plenty of great adaptations in the future.
Netflix is already ahead of the game, having released the adaptation Gerald’s Game with plans to release an adaptation of King’s 1922 in November.
Hulu is also eager to cash in on the success of King’s latest adaptations, as they have a series called Castle Rock in development which will be inspired by a variety of King’s stories.
