This year’s DC Extended Universe film Justice League is supposed to mark a change for the DCEU. It’s being said that the film will have a much lighter tone than the dark tone of previous films like Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Personally, I didn’t mind the dark tone, but fans complained, so Warner Bros. made some changes – though, this was reportedly their plan all along.
Regardless, while speaking to Vulture, DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson explained there’s going to be a new approach to the continuity of the DCEU:
“Our intention, certainly, moving forward is using the continuity to help make sure nothing is diverging in a way that doesn’t make sense,” she said, “but there’s no insistence upon an overall story line or interconnectivity in that universe. Moving forward, you’ll see the DC movie universe being a universe, but one that comes from the heart of the filmmaker who’s creating them.”
Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns added:
“Some of the movies do connect the characters together, like Justice League. But, like with Aquaman our goal is not to connect Aquaman to every movie.”
Though it’s been reported that a lot of this involves changing Zack Snyder’s vision, recent reports claim that that’s definitely not the case:
“As of right now, despite the fact that there’s been some extended time and it’s like ‘ok, if this is still – why are they still doing shoots on this,’ there’s been a lot of downtime in between shooting because of people’s schedules – they have not been shooting this entire time. The amount of content that has been shot and is being shot is still pretty much what they expected and figured was going to be happening. They haven’t said ‘oh, we need to add additional – we need to do a whole bunch more,’ or anything like that at this point, so, the footage and the amount of footage in the film, as of right now, the majority of the footage that you’re going to see on the screen is still the footage that was previously shot during principal photography… I know I’ve seen people worried and say ‘why is it taking so long,’ it’s because this is post – this is reshooting and filming that requires people’s schedules to line up, getting things in order, so it has not been as easy as they expected it to be when this was all being planned months ago.”
The next DCEU film, Justice League, hits theaters November 17th.
