A Nightmare on Elm Street‘s Freddy Krueger is one of the most iconic villains of all time. And it’s not because he wears a cool mask like Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers. It’s because of actor Robert Englund’s hauntingly comic performance as the Springwood Slasher. And because of his performance, it’s become increasingly difficult for fans to see anyone else in the role. It’s part of the reason why the 2010 remake failed, and it’s been part of endless discussions about who else could possibly do Freddy right.
One actor that’s been brought up before, and now apparently Robert Englund even approves of, is Kevin Bacon. Englund had this to say about Bacon taking over the role during an interview with CinemaBlend:
“Well the gossip I’ve heard, and I don’t know how valid this is, but there has been some talk about using, or perhaps he’s been approached, Kevin Bacon. Yeah. I think that would be great. He’s in one of my favorite little horror movies, Stir of Echoes, and you should check it out if you haven’t seen it. And I just think Kevin’s the right size. I think he respects horror movies. He doesn’t make fun of them. I think it would be real interesting.”
It’s certainly a very interesting idea to give Kevin Bacon the starring role of Freddy Krueger. He’s played a somewhat similar villainous role in Hollow Man, but even still, Freddy Krueger requires a bit more physical acting than an invisible man.
Bacon has actually expressed interest in the iconic role in the past.
But with Englund’s desire to see him in the iconic sweater and fedora, maybe Bacon does have what it takes. Although it may take more than a big name and Englund’s blessing to bring the world a new Freddy Krueger – perhaps the studios should keep looking for a smaller time actor much like Englund himself before taking the part.
