Godzilla: King of the Monsters won’t be released until 2019, but production is already underway. Director Michael Dougherty has released an exclusive shot of the great beast on his Twitter page. Captioned “Day 69 @GodzillaMovie,” it shows an unfinished CGI image of ‘Zilla, presumably during a battle against one of his many enemies. Fortunately, it looks like his terrifying appearance hasn’t been changed.

King of the Monsters will serve as a direct sequel to 2014’s Godzilla, which resurrected Toho’s legendary beast for a new generation. It was the beginning of a modern MonsterVerse. He will face off against several of his most legendary foes, including Rodan, Mothra, and the three-headed Dragon, King Ghidorah. And there’s also King Kong. Introduced into the ‘verse in this year’s Kong: Skull Island, the two will come face to face in Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020.
It will be fascinating to see how the King of the Monsters fares against the other iconic kaiju. In the Toho films, which span the decades since the 1950’s, he’s faced off against these and others many times. While he would sometimes be temporarily defeated, Godzilla would always prevail in the end.
Details about the plot of King of the Monsters are scarce so far. All we know is that it will chronicle the efforts of the Monarch corporation to defend the world from an onslaught of new giant monsters. Will Godzilla defend the earth as well, or will he be part of the threat?
Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins return to their respective roles. Joining them are Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr, and Zhang Ziyi.
