A new Hellboy movie has been rumored and in talks for quite some time now. Fans of Ron Perlman and Guillermo del Toro weren’t pleased about their jilt from the newest movie in the works. But there is always hope for a Ron Perlman cameo, right? Think again.
When Hellboy was released in 2004 and Hellboy: The Golden Army followed in 2008, we were certain Perlman would make it to the third one. That doesn’t seem to be the case, though, as Neil Marshall, who directed Game of Thrones and The Descent, will be directing the latest sequel, Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen. David Harbour has been cast as Hellboy.
Perlman was proud to play the part for the two films he was able, so it was gracious of him to wish Harbour luck. Fans just couldn’t put it to rest, however, so when one well-meaning fan asked Perlman if he would make a cameo, his response was less than excited for the idea. It seems he wants nothing to do with the film if Guillermo del Toro isn’t leading it to greatness.
Unfortunately, del Toro isn’t making it back to the set as he had hoped, and Hellboy: The Golden Army was a big reason why. It didn’t do as well as the first one at the box office, and there were problems with its distribution. That being said, it was only a recent development that del Toro wouldn’t take part in the creative process of the film.

Despite the one comment from Perlman about a cameo appearance, he and del Toro have been pretty calm about the whole thing. Other members of the crew from the two previous films have not been so relaxed. Jeffrey Tambor has not been pleased with Mignola’s vision for the franchise. Though fans were happy with the way del Toro portrayed the story, Mignola has decided to go for a darker film.
It does seem a little odd to start a sequel with a different headlining actor than the previous two films. We may just need to see where this goes before we judge it.
But if anyone is missing the Hellboy we all know and love, it usually airs on the movie channels pretty frequently. Maybe we can console ourselves with that for the time being.
