Carrie Fisher’s death sent shock waves across the world. It not only affected people in the film business and those who love cinema – but it also hit people who admired the character and saw Fisher and Princess Leia as a sign of female empowerment.
We last saw Fisher in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and anyone anticipating The Last Jedi was more than looking forward to seeing her play one of her most famous roles once again.
With that, co-star John Boyega has given fans news that Leia will be given a proper send off in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Fisher was able to complete all of her scenes for the upcoming film and the franchise had plans to bring her character back in Episode 9.
There were rumors a while back that maybe her likeness might be used later in Episode 9 using digital manipulation – but Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy squashed those reports.
Boyega told ABC News that Fisher’s last onscreen appearance in Episode 9 would be handled with grace befitting a princess:
“This movie, it sends her off in an amazing, amazing way. And she is still kept alive in this franchise. That’s the beauty of it: She lives forever in a sense.”
Even though Boyega and Fisher didn’t share many scenes in Star Wars: Force Awakens, the actor went on to say that the two will appear many more times together in The Last Jedi:
“We worked together closely on this,” he told ABC News.
Boygea continues by saying that the cast and crew will still never get over the lost they felt once the news came out of Carrie Fisher’s death:
“It was a strange, strange feeling,” Boyega said. “I felt like everyone in the cast went silent for a bit after that.”
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to be released in theaters December 15th.
