Well, folks, Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island have grossed a combined $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Meaning of course that we’ll be getting a lot more of these monster movies including an epic showdown between King Kong and Godzilla that has just found its director. The Hollywood Reporter just reported that Warner Brothers is tapping renowned horror director Adam Wingard to direct Godzilla vs. Kong for a summer 2020 release.
Wingard popped onto the horror scene with his 2011 film You’re Next. Since then, Wingard has directed the terrific film The Guest and the not so terrific film Blair Witch as well as segments for the anthology films The ABCs of Death and the first two films in the V/H/S series.
I will admit that this is something of an odd choice for Warner Bros. Despite his talent as a filmmaker, Wingard has yet to work on a project that has more than a $5 million price tag attached to it. An action and spectacle driven summer blockbuster seems out of his wheelhouse. The situation reminds me of indie comedy directors Marc Webb and Colin Trevorrow taking on The Amazing Spiderman and Jurassic World respectively. And we all know just how “great” those films are.
In the meantime, you will be able to catch Wingard’s current project Death Note (based on the popular horror manga) on Netflix this August.
So what do you think, readers? Is Adam Wingard the right choice to direct the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong movie? Sound off below!
