One of the best aspects of Logan released earlier this year was the addition of Wolverine Clone/Daughter X-23 also known as Laura Kinney.
Played by Dafne Keene in the first R-rated Wolverine movie she hit the screen in a spray of blood and limbs. But it appears now that she is unlikely to appear in any future X-Men projects.
Hutch Parker, a Fox/X-Men producer has stated that fans shouldn’t expect to see Laura appear in any other X-films. In an interview with IGN he stated:
“Yeah, I mean, look — I don’t know definitively, but in terms of the stuff we’ve been talking about, it’s not sort of slipping her into the background of another movie. It’s looking at that character, which is a great character and has a pretty interesting run within the comics, to find a story that we think she could carry or certainly be kind of majorly significant within. That’s the only kind of thing that Jim as a storyteller, a filmmaker… that’s the way his sort of process works. And the way his mind works in terms of what he would aspire to. Which isn’t to say that the studio couldn’t have a conversation about something else, but the one that we’ve been kind of discussing loosely and kicking around is more likely to be its own film.”
However, looking at the interview, it would seem the brains behind the X-franchise are trying to find a way to fit X-23 in to any future projects.
As Logan was set in 2029 it would appear that Laura is too far away from the main continuity of the X-Men to be slotted in, but with the right people behind the project there is always a possibility.
It also comes down to down well Dafne Keene portrayed the character and as one of the stand-outs from Logan, Fox would be foolish not to find a place for her.
If she can’t find a place in the X-Men continuity or New Mutants, wouldn’t it be wise to maybe throw Cable into the mix? He could grab her and potentially take her back in time to Deadpool.
We will have to see how long it will be until we see X-23 again, and based in what we have seen and her popularity, I doubt it will be too long.
