Marvel’s cinematic universe is known for its expansive Easter eggs and foreshadows to future events and characters in films. Branching from movies to television to toys, we now have a new form in a media we certainly didn’t expect.
Disneyland is opening up their new ride based off the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy, entitled “Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!”. The description below is as follows:
Deep inside his fortress-like collection, the mysterious Taneleer Tivan (aka The Collector) is displaying his newest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy. They are trapped in customized display cases, suspended over a vast abyss. Unbeknownst to their unscrupulous captor, the intrepid Rocket has escaped and is enlisting the Collector’s VIP guests for help. Guests board a gantry lift, which launches them into a chaotic and hilarious adventure as they join Rocket in an attempt to break his fellow Guardians out of captivity.
Included with this ride will feature six randomized scenarios with its own choreography based on a classic song, akin to the typical theme of our theatrical team.
What really seals the deal, however, is the presence of two artifacts in the possession of the Collector that haven’t been featured before in the films…which allude to two characters in the Marvel comics yet to appear in film.
One such artifact is an “Asgardian War Hammer”, immediately correlating to Thor’s part of the world. The “Stormbreaker” is described as being “originated in the dwarven forge on Nidavellir, this finely crafted object is made of the powerful stone, Uru”.
The Stormbreaker is a weapon passed from Odin to one worthy of lifting the Mjolnir, and who else in the comics could this be referring to than Beta Ray Bill. Perhaps we are slated to a debut of him soon enough.
The other artifact is a bit more interesting, “found at the bottom of the Terran Ocean ”with “very little is known of the civilization that created them”. The obvious hinting is the presence of Atlantis and its ruler, Namor the Submariner.
Though it’s obvious the alluding is to the character, the cinematic ownership of the character is still in question with the last update being a vague update on “mostly” getting the rights back for the MCU. Perhaps this hints a conclusion to the deal. We’ll just have to see how time goes from there.
The ride opens up this Saturday.
