When it comes to reddit, anything goes. At the best of times it’s an explosive minefield of opinions which collide spectacularly with other people’s beliefs, creating firework display of raw emotion. Now reddit is obviously the perfect platform to throw out fan theories left, right and center as there always bound to attract attention. Well now it seems that one particular user who goes by the name of ‘jjbalvin,’ has resurrected that old Suicide Squad rumour of the Joker’s real identity.
Before Suicide Squad was released there were whispers around the internet in which fans believed that the latest incarnation of the Joker would actually turn out to be a psychologically damaged Robin. Well now that user has brought up the debate again and is convinced that Jason Todd was initially meant to be Harley Quinn’s very own Mr. J, before David Ayer changed plans at the last minute.
Now admittedly – the rumor did have a lot of force behind it as many news outlets had ran with the story which ultimately led to a section of the Batman fan base freaking out about the possibility of Robin having become the Clown Prince of Crime. However, after a few days had passed, David Ayer came out and debunked the rumor on his Twitter account to the comfort of fans worldwide.
When Suicide Squad was then released in August of last year, we ultimately saw how minimal the Joker’s role ended up being with much of the footage that Jared Leto had shot ending up on the cutting room floor. Well now user jjbalvin believes that both the tattooes and the footage that had been cut would have clearly shown how he was an ex Boy Wonder.
“We got the joker all covered up in tattoos, tattoos that have a meaning for example the bird in his arm, the same bird that symbolizes Robin, the “tear” on his cheek that looks more like a J for Jason, the word “damaged” that means Jason was tortured to a point where he ended up really bad mentally speaking, the skull with the clown hat which represents the death/rebirth of Jason as the Joker. All of those were hints. But that’s the problem they were too obvious and too much.”
Personally, I think the reasons stated above are flimsy at best and I never really saw how the tattoo’s linked to being anything more than just artwork. With a lot of the designs being heavy handed nods to the Joker’s mental state, some people have interpreted them as being more than just decoration. The user then goes onto describe how the deleted scenes may have had more revelations regarding the Joker’s heritage and how we’d never be able to know due Leto’s contract forbidding him from revealing anything.
“Maybe those scenes had information that would confirm this theory. Who knows. And why didn’t Leto say anything about what contain those scenes? Simply, because he signed a confidentiality agreement. The thing you have to do when you are involved in this kinds of movies. Besides, how do you explain that in this universe Joker looks like he were in his 20’s (just like Harley) and we see that Bruce is almost in his 50’s? I think David Ayer was really into this one but did not count on the fans discovering it.”
Once again, I think that this particular Reddit user is clutching at straws – however, it’s still fun to read. At the end of the day, it’ll certainly get people talking and who know’s … maybe just maybe he’s right (but he’s not). Maybe the guys at Warner Brothers have taken their love for Frank Miller to a whole new level and have been inspired to use the deranged ‘Joker’ aka Robin (Dick Grayson) in The Dark Knight Strikes Again! Personally, I think that would be a damn cool concept to bring onto the big screen.
Would you like the Joker to be Jason Todd? Were you a fan of Leto’s portrayal? Which incarnation of the Joker would you like to see? Sound off down below!
