As we approach the release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and more interviews and test screens are performed, additional details are leaking every day. It’s becoming harder to go into the film spoiler-free, but in case you have to know what’s going to happen, several major cameos have been confirmed.
It seems that by the end of the film, new characters played by Ving Rhames and Michelle Yeoh appear. Director James Gunn has confirmed that the characters are in fact Charlie-27 and Aleta Ogord, two ravager leaders. We’re still not given details about why they appear, but we do know they’ll be showing up in one of the after-credits scenes as well. And this time they’ll be joined by another new character, Stakar, this time played by Sylvester Stallone. There will also be two aliens named Krugar and Mainframe. The five characters vow to band together and start some heists.
What these characters actually are is, in fact, the first Guardians of the Galaxy team from the original comics series. Stakar, Charlie-27, and Stakar’s wife Aleta alongside Yondu, Major Vance Astro, Martinex, and Nikki Gold, were the original Guardians.
It wasn’t until Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy book formed the team that would be featured in James Gunn’s 2014 film.
Kevin Feige had this to say about the new characters appearing in the future:
“You will not see [Charlie-27 and Aleta] until [Guardians] 3 at the earliest. One of the original ideas was, James [Gunn] was fleshing out the character of Yondu… and having the fun of tipping our hat to the original Guardians team. [It] just gives James another set of tools to play with as he’s piecing together future stories.”
Meanwhile, Stallone also hinted at his future involvement, suggesting that nothing is certain in Hollywood. He’s also revealed that he’s been reading plenty of Guardians comics. When asked why, the actor said “I’m optimistic”.
We should be learning more as the release date approaches, when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5, 2017.
