After a roaring debut last weekend, Beauty and the Beast continued to dominate its competitors. Dropping only 49% from last weekend, the Disney remake earned an impressive 88.3 million dollars this weekend. A drop that small for a blockbuster is super impressive, as this is the fourth highest second weekend gross of all time.
Disney continues to rake in the money, and its really no surprise with this film. Based on one of their most well-known properties, this film is one that appeals to all demographics across the board. With big returns for Disney so far, look for them to continue to remake their classic films. The film has earned 316.9 million dollars so far on a 160 million dollar budget.
Opening at number two this weekend is Power Rangers, which opened to a solid 40.5 million dollar debut. Despite mixed word of mouth (around 46% on Rotten Tomatoes), the film was able to appeal to its teen demographic. Considering the competition the film was facing, this is a worthwhile debut, and it looks like the film could hold up well going forward with an “A+” CinemaScore. Power Rangers costs 100 million dollars to make, a figure it should be able to reach.
Also opening this weekend was Life, which didn’t show much box office vitality. The science fiction film opened in fourth place, earning a mere 12.6 million dollars. Even with two big stars and an aggressive marketing campaign, the film failed to draw in audiences, probably because it looked so derivative of Alien and other science fiction films. The film costs 58 million dollars to make.
Failing to draw much interest as well was CHiPS, which earned only 7.6 million dollars in seventh place. As an adaptation of a little-known property, this seemed like an odd show to give the 21 Jump Street modern treatment. It also helps that neither of the film’s stars are particularly big box office draws. CHiPS costs 25 million dollars to make, a figure it would be lucky to break even with.
