It’s a passing of an era as Hugh Jackman gives up his claws as Logan/Wolverine after 17 years of playing the mutant. The Logan film was quite apropos at giving him his major send off, but now who will take on the mantle of the adamantium-clawed hero?
Writer-producer Simon Kinberg hasn’t thought that far ahead into who would take on the Wolverine mantle in the X-Men franchise, but with the New Mutants, Deadpool 2, and others on their way, he should come up with something soon.
Kinberg said they were also waiting on the response to the Logan movie and decided to include Jackman in the decision making process.
Per CBR:
“We haven’t even thought of the next iteration of Wolverine. For all of us, we were keeping our fingers crossed that the audiences would respond to ‘Logan’ the way they have. I can’t visualize in my head another Wolverine, but — if that day ever comes — we would talk to Hugh [Jackman] about it.”
We’re getting into a bit of spoiler territory here if you haven’t seen Logan just yet, but apparently the popularity of the character has even further risen since his death at the end of the film due to adamantium poisoning from his already grafted skeletal bones as well as his failing healing factor.
That said, with this kind of response and how Hugh Jackman has been so ensconced in the role, it would make sense that Kinberg and the studios may revive him years later even though not too much thought has been given at this time.
Afterall, fan clips, fan art, montages, and the like have been spreading like wildfire on the Internet of Jackman’s final farewell to the character. The sounds of Johnny Cash playing in the background makes it all the more moving.
