There is a Star Wars Aftermath canon trilogy book set out/due out by Chuck Wendig and Empire’s End marks the finishing portion of all three. There had been a lot revealed in the previous two books, but with this final installment fans will indeed find out what’s been going on with Jar Jar Binks, a character rather despised in the prequel movies.
His appearance occurs between Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi.
SPOILER ALERT: If you don’t want to read further.
A boy encounters an old Gungan street performer and introduces himself. The entertainer responds in kind:
Meesa Jar Jar.
If anyone recalls Jar Jar, he was quite the accident prone buffoon and according to the dialogue in Empire’s End, it looks like he’s pretty much hit rock bottom explaining to the boy that “he’s ‘makin some uh-oh mistakens’ in the past that led him here; mistakes that the world has harshly judged him for.”
The author Wendig sets it all up though before the big reveal.
“Since children started coming in by the shipload as refugees, the Gungan has served them, performing for the kids once or twice a day, He does tricks. He juggles. Hefalls over and shakes his head as his eyes roll around inside their fleshy stalks. He makes goofy sounds and does strange little dances. Sometimes it’s the same performance, repeated. Sometimes the Gungan does different things, things you’ve never seen, thing’s you’ll never see again. Just a few days ago, he splashed into the fountain’s center, ten pretended to have the streams shoot him way up in the air. He leapt straight up, then back down with a splash. And he leapt from compass point to compass point, back and forth, before finally conking his head on the edge and plopping down on his butt. Shaking his head. Tongue wagging. All the kids laughed. Then the Gungan laughed, too.
The clown, they called him “Bring the clown. We want to see the clown. We like it how he juggles glombo shells, or spits fish up in the air and catches them, or how he dances around and falls on his butt.”
The adults, though. They don’t say much about him. Or to him. And no other Gungans come to see him, either. Nobody even says his name.”
Jar Jar Binks explains to a child why no adult would talk to him.
My no so sure.” The Gungan makes a hmm sound. “Mesa thinks it cause-o Jar Jar makin some uh-oh mistakens. Big mistakens. Der Gunga bosses banished me longo ago. Mesa no been to hom in for-ebbers. And desa hisen Naboo tink I help the uh-oh Empire.
This is interesting because last year the actor who voiced Jar Jar, Ahmed Best, was interviewed about the real life haters, typically adults, but did acknowledge how real life children did like him. In fact, it was his ability to amuse his younger family members, according to Nerdist.
“I would read a lot of stories to kids, my nieces and nephews, and my little cousins. As I would do storybooks I would do different voices for the characters, and Jar Jar’s voice was kind of the character that I had, my generic little kid voice.”
Best did mention how the target audience of children in the real world appreciated the character and still don’t hold any dislike to him even after they’ve grown up.
Star Wars Aftermath: Empire’s End is slated to be released in stores next week.
