Ridley Scott is one of those director who has done nearly every type of film imaginable, in nearly every genre possible. Except in the superhero genre, and that doesn’t look like it’s going to change anytime soon with what he said in a recent interview with Digital Spy.
“I can’t believe in the thin, gossamer tightrope of the non-reality of the situation of the superhero.”
He critique of the genre goes further, with comparisons being made to his own ‘Blade Runner’.
“Blade Runner really is a comic strip when you think about it, it’s a dark story told in an unreal world. You could almost put Batman or Superman in that world, that atmosphere, except I’d have a fucking good story, as opposed to no story!”
Before finally finishing off with a rather damning claim on the current state of cinema.
“Cinema mainly is pretty bad.”
It’s hard to agree with what Scott’s saying, yes he has shown himself to be an excellent director with brilliant films such as ‘Alien’, ‘Blade Runner’ and more recently ‘The Martian’, but he is not immune from his fair share of duds, such as ‘Robin Hood’ and ‘Prometheus’.
And there’s the simple fact that you can’t group superhero films into a single level of quality, they are just like any other genre/medium in the industry, with both bad and good films. Saying that all superhero films have no story is like saying all comedies can’t be taken seriously. It’s an unjust criticism to apply to the whole genre.
