Fans clamouring for Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox to join forces and integrate the X-Men into the MCU are definitely going to be disappointed with what Kevin Feige had to say on the matter.
When interviewed by Variety he simply said:
“It’s an impossibility at this juncture. We certainly have enough films to keep us busy for a number of lifetimes.”
So the response is basically the same as its always been, a simple ‘no’ right now, but never say never. Which is fairly understandable.
His justification simply boils down to the fact that the MCU has got a bright future without the need for the X-Men, and given the upcoming slate of films, I have to agree with him. Phase 3 has a very solid line up, and from the sounds of things the plan for Phase 4 is pretty close to being set in stone.
If anything the only circumstance under which Fox would make a deal with regards to the X-Men is if they need to, rather than Marvel.
As it stands, while the X-Men series certainly had potential for a much brighter future with ‘First Class’; ‘Apocalypse’ was a let-down, both critically and financially. And given the recent rumour that Fox are planning a complete reboot of the X-Men franchise, I think the future of the X-Men depends entirely on this apparent reboot.
Basically if the new reboot is a success, a deal is never going to happen, however if it crashes and burns, then a deal with Marvel more likely. But even then, this is a circumstance that is not likely to happen until way into Phase 4 for Marvel, and not until Fox have released ‘Logan’, ‘Deadpool 2’, and the as of now untitled sequel to ‘Apocalypse’ (reportedly based on the Phoenix Saga).
What do you guys think of Feige’s statement? Should Fox fix their failing franchise by giving it up to Marvel? Or keep trying to go strong on their own two feet? Let us know in the comment section below!
