Opening in theaters this weekend, Doctor Strange is already been revered as one of Marvel’s more unique and better entries in its cinematic universe. The film is already Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, scoring an impressive 90% rating from the site so far.
Not everyone appears to be on board however. The film, which follows Stephen Strange’s journey into become a master of the mystic arts, has received a fairly strong negative reaction from Christian critic Dr. Baehr, who issued a press release against the film:
[Doctor Strange is] a dangerous introduction to demonic occult deception. … The Bible clearly warns against the kind of occult practices and sorcery the hero in this movie learns to do, in Deuteronomy 18:9-12 and Galatians 5:20. Also in the movie, the hero’s New Age, occult guru teaches there may be no afterlife, that death is truly the end, and that this is a good thing.
This is not the first time Christian-based critics have been hard on big blockbusters, and it surely won’t be the last. Based of this press release, its easy to see why they feel that way, with the film contradicting much of their central beliefs.
At the same time, I think these are the type of moments that exemplify the problem with Christian critics. Everyone obviously have biases when approach movies, but Christian critics often times wear them far too much on their sleeve. I get having your beliefs, but its another thing to not give a film a chance because of that.
