Many fans were shocked by the news of Tim Miller’s departure from Deadpool 2. His direction of Deadpool, which was actually his directorial debut, was a key component of the film’s success. He maximized his fairly miniscule budget, creating a film that captured the essence of the character with style.
Since his departure, much speculation has been made to who will take the helm of the sequel. The rumor mill has swirled with several big names, with a pretention even being crafted for the great Quentin Tarrentino to direct the feature. Much of this, however, is merely speculation, with Fox not yet showing their cards as to who they would choose.
Well, it appears that there may be a frontrunner in the race. John Wick director David Leitch is now the rumored front-runner, with his experience as an action director and stunt choreographer giving him a solid resume to approach the subject matter.
The choice of Leitch would make a lot of sense in several aspects. His detailed background in crafting action scenes is key, with the Deadpool character in particular mostly using hand to hand combat and gunplay in his battles. With the budget probably not increasing all that much, it’s important to have a director who can utilize what he has to work with.
More importantly, Leitch’s selection would most likely mean the key voice behind the project would be star Ryan Reynolds. Much of Miller’s falling out was over debates with Reynolds, as they argued over key aspects of the sequel. Bringing in someone who is very much focused on the action aspect lets Reynolds oversea what happens as far as the story and character goes. Whether Reynolds being completely unhinged is a good thing or not is an interesting debate.
Although he hasn’t been officially touted yet, Leitch’s selection would be a solid one in a series that isn’t afraid to give smaller directors their shot. We will have more updates on this developing story as they come.
