Last Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead finally revealed who it was on the receiving end of Negan’s wrath and in true Walking Dead fashion, it was extremely brutal. While this brutality may have been an accurate representation of the comic it was based on, one advocate group has disapproved of it being shown on the screen. Read on to find out more. Be warned, there will be spoilers ahead.
The group known as the Parents Television Council, has released a statement in relation to last Sunday’s episode which saw fan-favorite characters, Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) and Sgt. Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) brutally beaten death by Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his ‘Vampire Bat’, Lucille.
Speaking to THR, the groups President Tim Winters explained:
Last night’s season premiere of The Walking Dead was one of the most graphically violent shows we’ve ever seen on television, comparable to the most violent of programs found on premium cable networks,” Winter said. It’s not enough to ‘change the channel,’ as some people like to advocate, because cable subscribers — regardless of whether they want AMC or watch its programming — are still forced to subsidize violent content. This brutally explicit show is a powerful demonstration of why families should have greater control over the TV networks they purchase from their cable and satellite providers.”
Winters went on to add:
When you look at definition of MA and what content of the show is, it’s unquestionable they chose what best represented the content, This certainly raises question of if there should be an even more severe rating than TV MA.”
He then concluded with:
“I understand violence is inherent to the storytelling here but the manner in which the depictions were made … it crossed the line.”
In response to this the episodes director, Greg Nicotero revealed to Comicbook.com:
It’s unfortunate that people want to take a negative spin on it because as far as I’m concerned I’m dedicated to watching a show to see where it goes next, That means we have done something to affect these people in a way they don’t necessarily know how to process.”
While the group certainly wasn’t the only one who found the episode on the extreme side, what happened wasn’t anything too different from what the show has been for the past six seasons. Coupled with the fact that it airs after 9 P.M, a time typically reserved for shows to appeal to a slightly more adult audience, it’s a bit ridiculous that they would suddenly make a stand against the show now. Besides, with it being a show revolving around the Zombie Apocalypse, it’s probably not going to be a show you watch with the kids.
