The first official trailer for Logan dropped this morning after much anticipation since the release of the poster a few weeks ago. The trailer shows the direction in which director James Mangold is taking the franchise and with this being the third and final installment of the Wolverine movies, it does not disappoint.
After watching the trailer, we get something we have truly never seen before coming from a Wolverine movie, a sense of the nitty gritty Logan we all received in the comic books but failed to grasp in the movies. Another thing we finally get to see, after much debate and rumors, is X-23 – and she did not disappoint.
As we get our first glimpses at Laura Kinney (at least that is her name in the original comics), we see some pretty cool things. Being cloned from only Logan’s X chromosomes, she has some alterations to her powers that differ from Logan. She has two claws in each wrist and a claw the unsheathes in each foot. In the trailer, she puts her full arsenal out for us to see. Having been in training since birth, she is already a thorough and nimble killer. It seems that she is thorough enough that she can take on Logan himself in one of the scenes.

Okay, I know what you’re thinking. How can a child take on Wolverine? If you aren’t as attuned to comics as some, you need to understand the timeline and where this movie gets its nuances from. Logan is taking cues directly from the comic book, Old Man Logan – which is a lot darker, a lot meaner and set far off in the future with most of the mutants either dying off or being eliminated. This sets up the movie for the darker sense you get from the trailer. On top of that, Logan is getting up in his years and therefore his healing factor isn’t what it used to be. How do you think Professor Xavier feels?
From the looks of the trailer, we might actually have Xavier bringing X-23 to Logan, he is heard saying that there is a mutant “like you, very much like you.” Which leads us to believe that Xavier is going to have some part of their bonding or even training. Everything up to this point is simply speculation – and speculate we must. Originally, the thought was that X-23 would be taking the mantle from Hugh Jackman as he retires his role in the franchise, but with the movie be set many decades in the future, who knows how they will utilize the new weapon X in the future.
Logan hits theaters on March 3rd, 2017.
