Hold onto your hats, Punisher fans, because we’ve got some important breaking news for you.
We were recently treated to some leaked set photos featuring Jon Bernthal as The Punisher in his upcoming Netflix series and now – thanks to more leaked set photos, an appearance from a Daredevil character has been confirmed!
OBVIOUS SPOILERS AHEAD!
After several months of rumours and speculation about when we’d be seeing Jon Bernthal on our screens again as Frank Castle, with only a vague ‘due for release sometime in 2017’ to work off, the Internet has exploded on the eve of NYCC with developing ‘Punisher’ stories.
At the start of this week, ‘Just Jared’ dropped a couple of photos of a heavily bearded Jon Bernthal roaming the streets of NYC, carrying a large kitbag. The site then went on to claim that these were from the first day of filming on set for the Netflix Punisher solo series.
Initially, this was met with suspicion by some fans. Being an ex-military man, the character of Frank Castle is traditionally clean and well presented, and Bernthal had remained clean-shaven throughout his run of ‘Daredevil’, which led to some speculation that the photos were from another project, and the story was a hoax.
Well, it looks like they are in fact VERY legitimate, as yesterday more photos were shared online of a bearded Bernthal filming a scene on a bench with Deborah-Ann Woll, who plays Karen Page in ‘Daredevil’:

This blows away any doubt that the shooting is for indeed for the Punisher solo series, and confirms that Bernthal hasn’t grown the beard for be purposes of a flashback, and the new series will be picking up in the aftermath of that explosive ending to season 2 of Daredevil.
Bernthal had confirmed in recent interviews that the series would not yet see the character of Frank Castle having fully converted to the persona of The Punisher, which would tie in with Karen Page still trying to help him and support him in the wake of his betrayal and incarceration.
For Punisher fans, the beard is significant as it may well link the series to the recent ‘Enter The War Zone’ storyline in the comics, where Frank hooks up with another ex soldier, Rachel Alves, whose family were also killed in a gangland shooting.
The only other cast member announced at this stage is Ben Barnes, as an unspecified villain, who may well end up being either a Nicky Cavella or a pre-Jigsaw version of Billy Russo. Bernthal has had to scale back his NYCC appearances due to this filming of the new series, but stay posted for new explosive ‘Punisher’ news as Comic-Con plays out.
