It’s been four years since Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy came to its conclusion with The Dark Knight Rises. When it was released, it received a mixed reception. Some heralded it as a fitting end to an incredible trilogy – whilst others saw it as a disappointment. However, one of the film’s stars has spoken in favor of the film. Read on to find out who it is?
Speaking to Cinemablend, Joseph Gordon-Levitt who starred in the film as Batman and Commioner Gordon’s Ally, Detective John Blake who was later revealed to be the Robin of that universes continuity – revealed his thoughts about the film’s ending. It saw Wayne leaving the contents of his Batcave to the young detective with the implication that he’ll take on the mantle. This ending was clearly meant to hint at a future film, but the actor himself has revealed that this was never director Christopher Nolan’s intention. He explained:
I know we’re all used to the sort of Marvel movies, which are just kind of endless series. They don’t really have a beginning, middle, and end. But I think Nolan very much thought of that movie as a conclusion.”
The actor also went on to explain why they would end the film with such a big tease given that it was definitely the conclusion. He said:
There’s a theme that runs through all three of those movies that begins in the first movie, runs through the second movie and it concludes in that moment where he says that Batman is more than a man, Batman is a symbol,’ before adding ‘And so to have another man other than Bruce Wayne kind of becoming Batman at the end of that trilogy, I think that’s the perfect ending to that story.”
Whether this will make people see the film in a different light remains to be seen, but it’s certainly good that Christopher Nolan stuck to his guns to give us a complete trilogy in the age of Mid-credit scenes and crossovers.
