Can you imagine the critical epicness that would be achieved by an Avengers / X-Men movie? Many of us can imagine it, and have been doing so for years now. If only those pesky studio rights weren’t in the way.
The first step may already be happening. According to rumor, the forthcoming TV series X-Men: Legion will be a part of Marvel Cinematic Universe canon. Then there was Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson, who was quoted at San Diego Comic Con as saying that his film will be “the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse.”
What the what? At the moment, we’re left to speculate on just what that cryptic statement might actually mean. With the reality-bending powers of the Sorcerer Supreme, is it possible that we’re going to see what’s going on in alternate universes? This would be the perfect opportunity to incorporate previously unseen characters, including Charles Xavier’s students.
Unfortunately, if that’s ever going to happen, it looks like it isn’t going to be now. Joe Russo, one half of the Russo brothers and co-director of Civil War and Infinity War, says it would be news to him.
“As far as we know, right now there isn’t talk regarding the X-Men. I don’t know if behind the scenes there were conversations, or if there are conversations happening, but we certainly haven’t heard of any.”
Well, that’s discouraging. But the Russos do have a history of making these things happen. After all, they were the ones who managed to broker a deal between Sony and Marvel, bringing Spider-Man to the MCU.
“Sony and Marvel had a relationship through Kevin Feige, us, and Amy Pascal. That’s really how Spider-Man came about. It requires a certain alchemy and a very special situation for studios to share properties.”
Well, that covers Spidey, but what about the X-Men? Unfortunately, “there was no talk on Civil War about the X-Men,” he says.
Of course, we never say never. If comic fans took no for an answer, we wouldn’t have a Deadpool movie today. So, keep your fingers crossed, and make your interest known. The more fans want it, the more likely it is to happen one day.
Do you hope to see the MCU and X-Men universes cross over? Let us know your thoughts!
