All of the characters in the MCU have been so perfectly cast (well, except maybe Jane Foster) that it’s hard to imagine a different actor playing any of the roles. The very possibility of any of them bowing out and being recast sends the entire internet into paroxysms of panic. So the thought that any one of them may have never been cast in the first place is pretty much unimaginable.
But it almost happened with the star spangled man himself, Captain America. Before Chris Evans was chosen, one other actor made it as far as a costumed audition.”The Office” star John Krasinski was suiting up as iconic hero Steve Rogers to read in front of the cameras, when a single moment changed his mind.
He happened to see Chris Hemsworth walk past, in full Thor costume. Insecurity set in instantly. In an interview with Conan O’Brien, Krasinski recalled the fateful moment.
“I went, ‘I’m good. This is stupid. That’s okay, I’m not Captain America.’”
No one can really blame any man for feeling inadequate when comparing himself to the Norse god of thunder. So, as he tells it. Krasinski bowed out of the audition process, making it that much easier for producers to choose Evans.
And we’re fortunate that it went down the way it did. While Krasinski is a capable enough actor, there’s no way he would have made a better Captain America. Chris Evans has taken an iconic comic character, and turned him into an iconic film character as well.
What do you think of this possibility? Would you have liked to see Krasinsky’s take on Cap? Or are you grateful that Evans got the job? Tell us your thoughts!
