2018 is set to be a big year for Marvel. Not only will it see the release of its biggest film to date in the form of Avengers: Infinity War, but also will mark the ten year Anniversary of the MCU, starting with the release of Iron Man in 2008. It sounds as though this won’t go unnoticed as it sounds like the year is supposed to be the biggest since its inception.
In an interview with IGN, one half of the directing duo, Anthony Russo explained a little about what we can expect in the 2018 threequel. Speaking to the interviewer he revealed:
I can’t get into too much detail about who we’re introducing, but these two movies are intended to be the culmination of everything that has happened in the MCU since the very first Iron Man movie,’ before adding ‘In being a culmination, these movies are in some ways going to be an end to certain things, and in some ways, they’re going to be the beginning of certain things.”
The reference to the end of certain things likely refers to certain actors whose contracts will be coming to an end with the film, namely Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth. Seeing the end of one era and the beginning of the new one.
The Captain America: Civil War director also revealed a little bit about the thought process in regards to which characters make the cut, revealing it to be a mix of characters who enjoy writing for and characters who fit the story they are creating. He explained:
“It’s a little bit of both, because you always have to make sure that your choices feel organic to the storytelling, and really, you have to sort of structure them in the way that they need to be there.”
Before also revealing:
You have to have them, or they shouldn’t be in the movie. It’s a little bit of a dance between the two, where you have big eyes, and you want everybody included in the movie, but you have to go through the process of… what’s the best story that you can tell.”
Given the success they had at blending narrative with characters in Captain America: Civil War, I have the up-mostĀ faith in the brothers to be able to do pull it off again when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters April 25th, 2018.
