Things are start to pick up steam for the latest Spider-Man movie. We revealed the apparent first poster for the movie just the other day and now we’re being treated to even more casting news. This news might be considered something of a spoiler so consider yourself warned. If that doesn’t deter you, then read on for some big news on the Homecoming homefront.
After having the character trapped in a licensing limbo for years, Sony and Marvel finally put aside their differences to play nice together in the same sandbox. The end result is that we get to have Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He had always been one of the main heroes missing from the MCU and, sadly, the Amazing Spider-Man films just didn’t cut the mustard.
So far, the response from fans to the latest version of the wall-crawler has been overwhelmingly positive since his appearance in Captain America: Civil War. Tom Holland is the youngest actor to put on the Spider-Man costume and has already embodied much of what fans know and love about the character from the comics. His quick-witted, wise-cracking take on Peter Parker is much more in line with his comic book counterpart, and he’s definitely one of the main reasons people can’t wait for the new movie. Well, that and the inclusion of Robert Downey Jr.
One of the most exciting things about Homecoming is that it won’t necessarily be yet another origin story. Spider-Man was introduced in Civil War with little background other than that he’s a brilliant teen with spider-powers that lives with his Aunt May. He’s one of those characters where everybody already knows how he got his powers and, at this point, rehashing his origin is just unnecessary. That being said, the latest movie will still cover Peter Parker’s tumultuous high-school years as he swings into the superhero world and learns what they say about great power. Early reports of the trailer shown at San Diego Comic-Con have drawn comparisons to John Hughes movies—but with superheroes. If that doesn’t get you excited for Homecoming, we don’t know what will.
The word on the street as far as casting is concerned is that we might know who Zendaya will be playing in the upcoming movie. The actress and pop star will be playing Mary Jane Watson in the film. Mary Jane is of course the long-time love interest of Peter Parker and this is honestly a fun and refreshing bit of casting that has us even more excited for the movie. This will mark the live-action film debut for Zendaya and we’re excited to see her fill the shoes of such an important character. We’ve seen Zendaya with red hair before and the actress definitely has the chops to fill the role. Face it tiger, we just hit the jackpot.
On top of the slew of exciting movie news has come the reveal of a new video game for the web-slinger developed by Insomniac Games, known by many as the team behind Ratchet and Clank. The PS4 exclusive was unveiled at this year’s E3 conference with an outstanding gameplay trailer to the general excitement of just about everyone. The open-world adventure will have players swinging through a beautifully rendered New York City. It also boasts a completely new story mode that’s a collaboration between Insomniac and Marvel, and it’ll have nothing to do with the upcoming film’s narrative.
The last time fans were treated to a Spider-Man game on consoles, it was a direct tie-in for Amazing Spider-Man 2 back in 2014. Since then, the character has made plenty of guest appearances in other, larger Marvel games but hasn’t headlined his own title. One of the few Spider-Man solo titles is a slot reel based on the comic called Spider-Man: Attack of the Green Goblin. It tasks players with testing their luck as they go up against one of the character’s greatest enemies. The game is one of many Marvel-themed casual titles available online and is a great way for fans to keep themselves occupied while waiting for the PS4 game. Sadly, there’s still no release date just yet for the new Spidey game, and Insomniac is keeping tight lipped about when to could expect it. If we had to guess, we’d probably shoot for some time next summer so that it can cash in on the popularity of Homecoming.
Thankfully, there is a good deal more information available about the movie. We know that Michael Keaton will be playing the Vulture in the villain’s first big-screen appearance. For starters, we know that the character is rumored to be one of three villains looking to terrorize Spider-Man’s life. We hope this won’t have an adverse effect on the movie itself, because superhero films tend to dip in quality the more villains you add (just look at Spider-Man 3 and Amazing Spider-Man 2). Despite this, we have high hopes for the movie and can’t wait for its release next summer.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to hit theaters July 7, 2017.
