It sounds as though Sam Raimi may finally be ready to throw his hat back into the comic book movie ring with a film about a young boy imbued with a great power. While this may sound somewhat familiar, I assure you it isn’t what you’re thinking.
As part of the recent leak on internet messaging board, 4chan a user revealed that the Evil Dead director is in line to direct the upcoming DC film Shazam. While the film is yet to cast the main hero, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has joined the film as main antagonist Black Adam.
As previously noted this wouldn’t be Raimi’s first foray into the world of comic book movies, having previously directed the original Spider-Man trilogy featuring Tobey Maguire. As the tone is likely to be fairly light-hearted, Raimi would be a good choice for the character.
Shazam sees youngster Billy Batson given the power to become superhero Captain Marvel by the ancient Wizard, Shazam. The comics in recent years have changed the heroes name to Shazam to avoid confusion with the Marvel hero Carol Danvers also known as Captain Marvel. It is likely that the film will take a similar approach given that Marvel’s Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson is set to hit theaters less than a month before.
Shazam is currently scheduled for an April 5th, 2019 release.
