Those animated movies have finally been dethroned as Star Trek: Beyond has taken the number one spot this weekend with $59.6 million. The Justin Lin directed installment in the 50 year old franchise had a sizable drop from the debuts of the 2009 reboot ($75 million) and Into Darkness ($70 million) but I wouldn’t get too panicked yet if you’re hoping for another sequel. There’s still international dollars to be earned and it’s not underperforming nearly as bad as The Final Frontier or Nemesis ($52 million and $43 million for their grand totals). Star Trek will survive like it always does.
In third place, the low budget horror flick Lights Out is already a runaway success with an awesome $21 million or more than four times its budget. James Wan is clearly going the Jason Blum route and picking up cheap horror films for distribution and profiting greatly. Let’s see if he can keep it up.
At this point Finding Dory has grossed an epic $460 million and The Secret Life of Pets has hit $260 million. With these huge successes in the field of animation, it seems we were overdue for a flop. Looks like it has arrived. In fourth place, Ice Age: Collision Course tanked with a series low of $21 million. The series has consistently pulled in openings around $4o million (with The Meltdown being the exception with $68 million) and it’s clear that audiences in North America are losing interest. Don’t be too sad, though. International audiences are eating this thing. It’s at $199 million worldwide already. Will there be a sixth?
