It seems like we’ve been getting a lot of Spider-Man news lately, but at the same time, we’ve been able to glean precious few details from the leaking photos and set details.
But now, we have a morsel of information straight from the horse’s mouth. Sony chairman Tom Rothman was interviewed by IGN on the Ghostbusters red carpet. Rothman explained the meaning behind the title Spider-Man: Homecoming.
“Here’s the thing I can tell you. We’re really, really fortunate on this, because Marvel and Kevin Feige have really embraced the character, and no one knows him as well as Marvel. It is another crown jewel of Sony’s for sure. But Homecoming, the name, that’s a double entendre on purpose.”
“It’s relevant to the story because it takes place in high school, and there’s a scene at a homecoming dance. I’ve actually seen the dailies of it because we’ve already done the high school filming of it in the first couple weeks, and it’s fantastic. But it’s also a homecoming to Marvel, and to the universe Spider-man belongs in. So it’s a pretty unprecedented deal between two studios, and we’re really proud of it. All I can tell you is, those guys at Marvel – I think the technical term is, they know their shit.”
It sounds like the Sony executives have full confidence in Marvel, and that the relationship between the two studios is going very well. Perhaps this will even lead to more Fox characters joining the MCU.
What do you think about the title’s explanation, and about the partnership between Sony and Marvel? Let us know!
