The streaming era has made it both easy and difficult to find movies compared to the previous era of video rental stores. Nevertheless, there’s one streaming service in particular that has a selection worthy of being compared to the endless aisles so many movie fans once spent browsing movies. Now an underrated 90s sci-fi movie has been added to this streaming selection that fans can view for free.
The streaming service is Tubi, a brilliant platform that allows viewers to watch any of the titles offered with the small cost of viewing an occasional ad. Otherwise, it’s totally free, and that makes it especially convenient for anyone interested in checking out or revisiting a sci-fi flick that definitely deserves the attention.
The film, first released in 1997, came out at a time when the horror and sci-fi genres were oversaturated to say the least. Especially following the self-aware hype of Scream, viewers just weren’t that interested in sci-fi horror at the time. Now, however, it makes one film particularly interesting to watch, especially given the director and cast attached.
Event Horizon came from director Paul W.S. Anderson just before he would begin producing the Resident Evil film franchise. Many of the sci-fi, horror, and action tropes depicted in those movies can be seen originating in Event Horizon. Anderson was clearly developing his directorial style with a cast that includes Sam Neill, Laurence Fishburne, and Kathleen Quinlan.
For those unfamiliar with Event Horizon, the plot has been compared to the likes of Alien and Hellraiser, and it seems to have influenced films, television, and video game projects to this day, including the Dead Space franchise. Specifically, Event Horizon revolves around a rescue crew that investigates the titular ship which previously vanished after experimenting with a new kind of gravity drive.
It’s this gravity drive that seemingly opens up a portal to hell, quite literally transforming the “Event Horizon” into a deadly playground with disturbing visions, ghosts, and sinister entities. While it might not be as well put together as something like Alien, it certainly is a fun watch, and one that deserves a reappraisal after it initially flopped at the box office in 1997.
Viewers can check out the sci-fi horror film Event Horizon which is now streaming for free on Tubi as of this writing. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional news regarding the latest titles worth streaming as we have them.
