Disney has received generally positive responses for most of the live-action adaptations of their animated works. One project that has received backlash ever since it was announced, however, is the live-action take on Snow White based on the original 1937 animated film. Now Snow White star Rachel Zegler, who will portray the live-action version of the titular character, chalks up fans’ “passion” for the original film as the reason for the backlash.
Zegler revealed her take on the situation while speaking to Vogue Mexico via Toonado. While some of the complaints surrounding the project refer to the reliance on CGI to create its dwarves, or that Disney is simply remaking yet another animated classic of theirs, others were specifically unhappy about Zegler being cast as Snow White because of her ethnicity.
Now this is what Zegler has to say:
“I interpret people’s feelings about this film as passion for it, and what an honor to be able to be a part of something that people are so passionate about,” she began. “We’re not always going to have the same feelings as everyone around us and all we can do is give our best.”
In an effort to further satisfy anyone who might have doubts about the new project, she insists that Disney “has found this beautiful, delicate balance between taking the animated classic that everyone knows and loves from 1937” while still “introducing it to this new generation.”
Ultimately, we’ll have to see how the film performs when it finally hits theaters this March. With reshoots, delays, and several controversies all adding to the aura surrounding the film, it’ll be interesting to finally have it in theaters in about one month.
Snow White will be released on March 21, 2025. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the project and any other upcoming Disney projects as we have them.
