The Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe is being prepared for a comeback. The fan-favorite television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, based on the 1992 film of the same name, ran from 1997 to 2003. Now a sequel series to Buffy the Vampire Slayer is nearing a pilot order at Hulu.
According to Variety, the new series will follow the events of the original show, and “Sarah Michelle Gellar is in final talks to once again play the iconic title character in the untitled project.” While Gellar would return as Buffy Summers for the project, it’s said that “it would focus on a new Slayer and Gellar would appear in a recurring role rather than leading the series.”
The outlet adds that “Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write, showrun, and executive produce. ChloĆ© Zhao is attached to direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Gellar would also executive produce along with Gail Berman. Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui will executive produce via Suite B, while Dolly Parton will executive produce via Sandollar. 20th Television and Searchlight Television will produce.”
It should be noted that Berman, Fran and Kaz Kuzui, and Parton were all involved with the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series as executive producers, so it’s fitting to see them return for the potential sequel series. Additionally, Joss Whedon is not involved with the project following allegations from stars of the original show that he created a toxic work environment.
Fans of the Buffy brand are sure to be excited, however, especially with Gellar involved as a recurring cast member. She seemed adamant about staying away from the character since the show originally ended, but it’s clear that she has since changed her mind. At a time when heroes like Buffy are needed more than ever, it’s certainly good to see her potential return.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series as we have them. The pilot is currently nearing an order at Hulu, so hopefully we’ll have more concrete news soon.
