Nostalgia is often a strong factor in what gets remade or revived for today’s audiences. As we move further away from the 1990’s, however, it seems as though that particular decade is being mined for material far more than what we’ve seen in recent years. Now a cult classic 90’s sci-fi horror movie is set to get the remake treatment.
Rumblings of a new movie based on this particular IP have surfaced occasionally over the last few years. After all, with the success of revivals like Scream and others in the works including a new sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer, it makes sense that this lesser-known title would eventually get the same treatment.
Now, as shared via Variety, we have a writer and several names attached to this sci-fi horror remake. Here’s what the outlet shared:
“Miramax will go back to school with a new version of ‘The Faculty,’ the 1998 sci-fi thriller that became a box office hit and cult favorite. Robert Rodriguez, who directed the original, will produce the film.”
In addition to Rodriguez as the remake’s producer, however, Variety adds that “Drew Hancock is writing the remake’s script.” Hancock is an inspired choice, as his debut feature titled Companion is just now hitting theaters. Hancock both wrote and directed the film. We also know that Barbarian filmmaker Zach Cregger’s production company, BoulderLight, will be producing this new take on The Faculty.
Plot details and the like are currently being kept under wraps. Hopefully we’ll have more details as development continues, especially considering how much of an impact the original film has had. The Faculty, which was written by Kevin Williamson and directed by Robert Rodriguez, featured an incredible cast including the likes of Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood, Jordana Brewster, and Clea DuVall.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the remake of the sci-fi horror cult classic The Faculty as we have them. It’s certainly an interesting choice for a remake, especially for today’s audiences, there could be some very inspired choices for the Body Snatchers type plot to tackle.
