The backlash to Joker: Folie À Deux has been incredibly negative ever since the DC film was released in theaters. While there are some viewers who feel as though the movie is a cult classic in the making, others were extremely disappointed with the way it handled Joker’s not-so-origin story. Now, as shared by co-star Lady Gaga who played Harley Quinn in the film, she has her own feelings about the backlash received by Joker: Folie À Deux.
Lady Gaga played the second live-action interpretation of Harley Quinn following Margot Robbie’s stint as the character in the DCEU. Her take on the character, however, was modeled to fit the world of 2019’s Joker and the performance established by Joaquin Phoenix as the titular Joker. Nevertheless, Joker: Folie À Deux still took liberties with its source material and its predecessor by delivering a very different kind of follow-up.
While these types of risks sometimes pay off, for this long-awaited sequel, they did not. Now Lady Gaga discussed the Joker sequel’s negative reception while speaking with Elle. Here’s what she shared:
“People just sometimes don’t like some things,” Gaga began. “It’s that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended.”
It’s an impressive point-of-view, especially to allow the audience their opinions about the film. While she’s likely disappointed the film wasn’t as successful as the first, one has to admit the cast and crew of Joker: Folie À Deux certainly weren’t afraid to try something new. With that in mind, fans definitely shouldn’t expect any additional follow-ups for that particular corner of DC.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional DC updates and whether or not anyone else involved with Joker: Folie À Deux has feelings about the film’s negative performance. It’s one thing to be a flop, but when one considers the overwhelming success of the first Joker in 2019, it makes the failure of Folie À Deux that much more surprising.
