A very interesting horror movie was released in 2020 when the world was struggling with the pandemic. Now, 5 years later, the release of that particular 2020 horror movie has done well enough that a sequel has been officially announced.
It certainly seems like a lifetime ago that 2020 happened, and thus this announcement is quite surprising. Especially when, while the film did do well during its initial release, many viewers likely missed it due to what was going on at the time.
Now, as shared via Variety, this movie is making a comeback by finally getting a sequel – and it seems likely that horror fans which missed the first film now have a reason to finally seek it out. Here’s what the outlet had to share about the 2020 horror movie finally receiving a sequel:
“‘The Wretched‘ sequel is happening.
Five years after the film’s original release, Brett and Drew Pierce (‘Deadheads‘) and their Little Runway Productions will begin production on ‘The Wretched 2‘ this September in Oregon, with casting underway.”
The Wretched, which revolves around a killer witch, will have its mythos expanded for the upcoming sequel. Here’s what Brett and Drew Pierce, the two brothers directing the new installment, had to share in their statement with Variety:
“Independent horror has been staking out its claim at the box office in the last couple of years with films like ‘Terrifier 3’ and ‘Late Night With the Devil,’ and audiences are craving more from these original stories and voices. It just seems like the right time to bring our Witch back as she was born out of us wanting more from our creature features that we just weren’t getting. We’re going to push this story and the body horror into uncomfortable places.”
It seems as though the success of horror films like Terrifier 3, which broke major records at the box office, has convinced studios that horror films are absolutely still worth the risk. Now the team behind horror film The Wretched are prepared to give their unique horror world another shot with The Wretched 2.
Fans can expect more news later this year, once The Wretched 2 begins filming in September. For now, however, it’s exciting to see an original horror film like The Wretched receive its first sequel with the passing of several years. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the project as we have them and hopefully more new horror films will be put into development for similar reasons with the ongoing success of the genre.
