The 2019 horror film Midsommar is still one of Florence Pugh’s most popular roles. However, Florence Pugh recently recalled just how intense her work on the film happened to be. In fact, Florence Pugh stated that she abused herself to achieve her unique and gripping performance in Midsommar.
Pugh explained this experience while speaking on the podcast Reign with Josh Smith. While her character in the film, Dani, goes through quite a traumatizing arc throughout the course of the film, it certainly adds another perspective to know how intense the experience was for Pugh herself.
As she shared:
“I definitely felt like I abused myself in the places that I got myself to go,” Pugh explained.
On that note, however, she explains that it’s something that happens when method acting and choosing such intense roles as the one she picked for Midsommar. Nonetheless, while she likely won’t return to any such performances in the future, she is quite happy with the finished product.
“I mean, the nature of figuring these things out is you need to go, ‘Alright, well, I can’t do that again ’cause that was too much.’” Pugh later added: “I look at that performance and I’m really proud of what I did, and I’m proud of what came out of me. I don’t regret it.”
Ultimately, her contributions to the film did work out for the best. It not only opened up the doorway for many of her current projects, but Midsommar itself was quite the success. It managed to gross $48 million at the box office with a $9 million budget, along with numerous positive reviews and support for Pugh’s performance.
