The Tomb Raider video game franchise is being prepped for another live-action adaptation. The hit video game title will be reimagined as a live-action television series for Amazon Prime Video, and it looks like Sophie Turner is in talks to play Lara Croft for the project.
This exciting updates comes from Deadline, with the outlet noting that “Sophie Turner is in negotiations to star as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, Prime Video’s high-profile series adaptation of the video game franchise from Emmy-winning Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-bridge.” At this time, however, they note that Amazon MGM Studios has yet to comment.
As mentioned, this is far from the first live-action adaptation of Tomb Raider. The video game was previously adapted for the 2001 and 2003 films Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life which both starred Angelina Jolie as the titular character. The next adaptation, Tomb Raider, was released in 2018 and starred Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft.
It’ll be interesting to see how this next adaptation, especially as a television series, manages to adapt the iconic video games. There should be more room for storytelling and better adapting elements of the game, including Croft’s character, and Sophie Turner would certainly be a good choice to portray her this time around. Of course, we’ll have to see what happens in the near future.
The series, which is executive produced by Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins via Wells Street Productions, is also executive produced by Dmitri M. Johnson through dj2 Entertainment, Michael Scheel, and rights holders Legendary Television and Crystal Dynamics. The series also has consulting producers through Amanda Greenblatt and Ryan Andolina with their Star Party banner. Meanwhile the series itself is produced by Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Tomb Raider updates as we have them. For now, this is an exciting step forward to seeing the classic video games once again brought to the screen. Hopefully this new adaptation will fit the standards held by fans, however, and give Lara Croft the live-action presentation she deserves.
