Netflix subscribers were surprised with a hit movie released earlier this year. Now, following that film’s success, it looks like a sequel is officially on the way. This is exciting news for fans of the first Netflix movie hoping for a sequel, especially given its open ending.
Of course, not every movie with an open ending guarantees a sequel – especially on Netflix. In fact, this would have been a perfectly cryptic ending to leave this horror film on.
Fortunately, it looks like director Xavier Gens is prepared to expand the story given the success of the first film.
In fact, Variety added it had “the best launch for a non-English language film on Netflix with more than 102.3 million views.” Therefore a sequel was just about inevitable after reaching those numbers.
The film, which is none other than Under Paris, revolves around a new species of shark that invades the Seine. In an over-the-top way that seems to satirize Jaws, the waters are infiltrated by sharks at the same time the city is hosting a triathlon competition. The mayor, of course, chooses not to close down the Seine – allowing the sharks to eat the swimmers.
For those have seen Under Paris, however, know that the film ends on a devastating note. The city is entirely submerged in water. This should make for an intense and unique follow-up, one which Variety notes will include several returning cast members. This includes the return of Bérénice Bejo and Nassim Lyes.
It’s currently unconfirmed when production on Under Paris 2 will begin, but the sequel is estimated to begin shooting anywhere from late 2025 to early 2026. As such, fans will have to wait some time before they’ll be able to see the continuation, but at least they know it’s in the works.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the development of Under Paris 2 as we have them. For now, however, it looks like fans can rest easy now that a sequel is confirmed to be on the way. Hopefully it won’t be too much longer before more details are released.
