The 1999 cult classic horror comedy Idle Hands is set to receive the remake treatment. Devon Sawa starred in the original film as Anton Tobias, a teenager who ends up with a possessed hand, and whose undead friends played by Seth Green and Elden Henson must help him. Now Finn Wolfhard and Jason Reitman are involved with the remake.

As shared by Variety, the outlet reveals that “Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk have signed on to write a reimagining of the 1999 horror comedy film ‘Idle Hands‘ for Sony Pictures that Jason Reitman will produce.”

Additionally, while a director hasn’t been attached to the project yet, the outlet adds that “Wolfhard and Bryk also are being eyed to direct the new ‘Idle Hands,’ following the sale of their festival hit ‘Hell of a Summer,’ which they co-wrote, co-directed, co-starred in and produced.” It seems that the success of Hell of a Summer has opened up all-new opportunities for the duo, with Idle Hands being their next big project.

Reitman shared the following statement regarding Idle Hands:

“Finn and Billy crushed their directorial debut and have a completely original take on ‘Idle Hands’ that captures a disaffected generation,” Reitman says. “We are excited to support them as they bring their unique take to the screen and summon the demons.”

While details on this remake are scarce, it’s been said that it will be “authentic to the demographic.” Reitman will produce alongside Jennifer Todd and Suzanne Todd via their Team Todd banner. The film is also being produced by Gil Kenan with Maia Eyre overseeing for Sony.

Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the Idle Hands remake as we have them. This cult classic is certainly an interesting choice for a remake, so we’ll have to see how this project evolves once we know more.
