The 2022 horror movie Smile from Paramount was a massive success with moviegoers, critics, and at the box office. It’s not surprising, then, that director Parker Finn returned to helm a sequel soon after with this year’s Smile 2. Now he’s revealed that it’ll take to make Smile 3.
The franchise potential for Smile is quite strong, especially when considering the ending of Smile 2. Of course, that also makes it quite difficult to make a sequel that can live up to the hype. Nevertheless, Parker Finn seems up to the task if certain conditions are met.
While speaking with Collider, Finn discussed the possibilities of Smile 3 and what his conditions would be. Here’s what he shared:
“Well, I will say this, I think there are a lot of interesting roads that any future Smile could go down. For me, I love all the stuff that goes bump in the night, and all the really frightening things of the big concept of Smile and the Smiler.”
Finn adds that, while the curse has no doubt spread to so many more people, he would still want to tell a more intimate character-focused story.
“But really, for me, Smile is a vehicle to tell really intense and hopefully thoughtful character stories , and so I’d wanna make sure, regardless of if more than one person might have it, that we still find a way to really invest intimacy into the storytelling . That’s super important to me. But I think there are some really interesting tricks still up the sleeves of Smile .”
It’s nice to see that he wants to keep the franchise close to its roots while continuing to surprise audiences. Though there’s nothing concrete, it would certainly be exciting to see him return for another Smile sequel. Especially if the ending of Smile 2 is any indication of what’s possible.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding a potential Smile 3 as we have them. For now, it’s great to see that Smile 2 has turned into another success much like its predecessor and one can hope that Finn has quite a few other projects on the way even if they’re not Smile 3.
