The 1996 horror movie Scream became a massive success due to its self-aware humor and its portrayal of slasher movies. Unlike the movies it referenced, however, the Scream sequels did not feature the original killers returning over and over. Instead, they created new killers with each installment, though some fans have believed that original Scream co-killer Stu Macher, played by Matthew Lillard, is still alive.
Matthew Lillard himself has played into the hype on occasion. Now, however, he’s explicitly calling out that his character Stu is “definitely still alive” following the first Scream movie. As fans might recall, his character was stabbed before being killed altogether after Neve Campbell’s Sidney dropped a TV on his head.
Theories have circled that he was intended to return for Scream 3, however, and 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI further brought to light the rumors and theories after jokingly playing with the possibility that Stu might be alive. Matthew Lillard has hilariously supported these rumors, and furthermore, addressed them again after appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show.
Here’s what he first said with a lot of humor:
“Listen, Stu is definitely alive,” Lillard began. He was then asked whether or not he’d be happy to return as Stu for a new Scream movie. Fortunately, he is:
“That would be fun. I would love it,” he answered. Though he added that he’d only like to do it if it was done in a way that made sense. “If it made sense for the franchise [and] if [Scream writer Kevin Williamson] liked it, then sure. I’m very slutty.”

Many fans are definitely open for Matthew Lillard to make a comeback as Stu Macher in a new Scream sequel. Of course, as Lillard himself notes, it would have to make sense for the story. There’d be a lot of explaining to do if Stu suddenly came back, even if he did have some scars on his face from his television injury. If it were to happen, however, it could very well be in Scream 7 which will feature the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott and Kevin Williamson as director.
Hopefully we’ll have more details on that project soon, and whether or not Lillard might end up involved. Scream 7 is scheduled to hit theaters on February 27, 2026. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more updates as we have them.
