The 2024 indie horror movie Longlegs has been a massive success with viewers, critics, and at the box office. The movie has manage to gross more than $100 million worldwide. And, considering the film’s $10 million budget, that makes it a huge success. Furthermore, it means a Longlegs sequel could be a real possibility.
This is, of course, based on what Longlegs writer and director Osgood Perkins himself said about doing a sequel. He made a statement regarding the possibility prior to the release of Longlegs. Fortunately, things seem to be lining up with what he suggested needed to happen.
As Perkins shared while speaking with Dexerto:
“Let’s see how it does at the box office. That’s what informs all things. I think that, yes, of course, once you’ve settled on something that seems to work and people enjoy it, there’s the nagging impulse to think, ‘We could probably do that again and stretch it out a little bit.’”
He continued, however, to ponder the possibility of simply leaving the movie alone as is:
“But there’s also something glorious about leaving things alone, right? That’s harder to do, isn’t it? Isn’t it harder to leave something alone than it is to try to do it again?”
Nonetheless, looking at the “box office” results like Perkins suggested, it’s safe to say that Longlegs succeeded in that arena. The film has not only become the highest-grossing indie film of 2024, and the highest-grossing R-rated horror film of the year, but Longlegs is also the highest-grossing indie horror film of the past decade.
Whether or not a sequel could be just as profitable remains to be seen, but the potential is certainly there. After all, Longlegs seems to take place in a fittingly supernatural world, so it could be easy to bring back Nicolas Cage‘s disturbing character. Or, at the very least, see what kind of legacy he’s left behind.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Longlegs as we have them. For now, the film has been hugely successful, but there still isn’t any official word on a sequel. As we consider the comments made by Perkins, however, perhaps that could change with a little time.
