James Wan’s 2010 horror film Insidious, much in the way of his other works like Saw and The Conjuring, successfully spawned its own franchise. The most recent installment, Insidious: The Red Door, was released in 2023 and made over $189 million globally at the box office. Now Sony has revealed a new Insidious film is in the works for a 2025 release.
Interestingly, this isn’t the only Insidious film currently in the works. A spin-off titled Thread: An Insidious Tale is also set to be released sooner rather than later, led by Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani and directed by Jeremy Slater. As noted by Deadline, they were able to confirm that Thread and the sixth Insidious film are two different projects.
The aforementioned $189 million that Insidious: The Red Door managed to earn at the box office is only a fraction of the franchise’s overall gross. In fact, it’s one of the most financially successful horror franchises around, having earned over $730 million globally. It’s no surprise, then, that Sony still has a desire for more Insidious movies to be produced by Blumhouse.
As for the story the new film will take, that remains to be seen. The most recent installment, directed by franchise star Patrick Wilson who made his directorial debut with the film, followed his character as he tried to reconnect with his son, Dalton, by dropping him off at college. It’s a decision that kicks off a new storyline once again crawling with supernatural plots and unexpected scares.
The Insidious franchise has certainly been fascinating to see evolve over the years. With sequels, prequels, a spin-off, and a sixth film on the way, it’s certainly covered plenty of bases. Hopefully more details will be released soon.
The sixth mainline Insidious film is currently scheduled to be released on August 29, 2025. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the Insidious film franchise including this next installment as we have them.
